Critique: Restaurant Staff

This has been an extremely frustrating illustration. The article (describing the different types of people that work in the restaurant business) is SO funny.
I'm having a hard time creating art that does it justice. For me it's really difficult to create an caricature that highlights the right elements of the story in a funny way. This is one of those times when I can see something in my head and I'm just unable to execute it the way I'd like. See below for the style I would have liked.

What I've done is okay, but it's not really as detailed as I'd imagined. Although it's not perfect, I think it will serve the purpose I want it to, as the illustration for a "menu" of all the different staffers.

YOU CAN'T MISS: The National Design Triennial
THis piece is called:

The Triennial is an annual exhibit featuring the year's best design. BUT you can't submit to it. You have to be chosen. The curators for the event try to choose pieces that represent the state of design, trends, undercurrents, etc across several disciplines: architecture, graphic, landscape, theater, robotics, and much more.

It's genius to combine all of these things together. We're all looking at eachother, anyway. Inspiration is such a nebulous thing. I love that there is one place that takes this into account and has accommadated all of design together.

Sounds cool, yeah?

RESPONSE: Publication Presentations

I had no idea how hard it oculd be desiging for something without having too much of an idea how the story would develop. It's been so ingrained in us to design with content foremost in mind that it's been extremely hard to get away from that. I think for me things turned out vague or maybe even unusable for the final product. It WAS interesting to see how many different ways a single idea can go. Not just from different people, as we usually see in design class, but froma single person. I think it's something that we already do, but usually the other ideas get phased out or morphed into one, great amazing ball of an idea.

Thisis a good, natural pre-step for next week's assignment.
